One of the many community service projects The Flying Needles Quilt Guild supports is Quilts of Valor. Quilts of Valor are made to donate to the national Quilt of Valor Foundation (QOVF) for distribution of heirloom-quality quilts to service men and women touched by war.
The guild has gone from making one QOV in 2009, to over 100 per year in the past few years. These quilts are made entirely from donations.
Distributed by the regional Air Force Recovery Care Coordinator, Michael Mack, or through the QOVF, to military personnel or veterans, quilts are a tangible message of comfort and support for the wounded. Each quilt is presented in a matching fabric case with a written journal of quilters’ comments and photos of the quilt-making process.
More information on the Quilt of Valor Foundation is available at www.qovf.org
The Guild has donated quilts to Returning Warrior Workshops (RWW), hosted by the Navy and Marine Corps, in Pensacola, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Boca Raton, Daytona Beach, Orlando, New Orleans, and Puerto Rico. Returning Warrior Workshops are for sailors and Marines who have recently returned from a deployment to facilitate the reintegration process and honor their service. Presentations of Quilts of Valor are a significant part of these events.
The Guild holds workshops several times a year for Quilts of Valor. Interested quilters are encouraged to attend and may contact Barbi Ouellette for more information.
