In 1988 a group of eight ladies started meeting informally at one of their homes. This group quickly developed into a non-profit organized quilt guild in 1990. At the time the only other local quilt guild was in Pensacola. This was a time when we used cardboard templates to cut fabric with scissors. Computers were new so our newsletters were written on a typewriter then copied to send to all members via U.S. Postal Service. A postage stamp cost 32 cents and we had to wait for days to get our photos developed from film before they could be pasted into the printed newsletter. No WiFi, no Facebook, no website.
In the years leading up to the present, we have increased our membership and our reach. We make Quilts of Valor for our military veterans, we host a regional quilt show and retreat in alternate years, we support local charities with quilts and Christmas stockings, we do fundraisers and have become a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. The guild meets every Thursday for our regular meeting and multiple workshops and teacher-led classes, providing skill-building opportunities and just opportunities to sit and sew with friends.
