Fabrics
Select a piece of fabric with a high thread count (batiks works great). It can read as a solid-ish or can be multi-colored as long as the color changes are subtle. Avoid busy prints. The stitching is the sart of the show, so you don't want your fabric to compete. See the class samples and the book- which has some great examples of what works and what doesn't.
